1. Wind energy in forested areas – tapping new potentials onshore
2. Technical due diligence – a crucial prerequisite for a successful wind farm project
1. Areas of managed forests hold a wind energy potential that has not yet been utilized on a large scale. TÜV SÜD experts have recently surveyed several planned wind farm sites in forested areas. Because tree heights, canopy diameters and the density of the forest vary, a detailed site assessment is necessary, including detailed modelling of wind and turbulence conditions. Furthermore, attention must be paid to seasonal changes, foliage, possible pest infestation and thermal properties of the forest. Only then is it possible to create a reliable foundation of solid data that allows the deduction of optimal hub heights and distances between turbines.
2. The further the realisation of a wind farm project progresses, the more elaborate and complicated the network of documents and contracts gets, on which it is based. Besides proving the suitability and profitability of the selected wind farm site, these documents regulate the cooperation of the parties involved in the project. It is therefore crucial that the buyer of the project reviews and analyses the entire documentation regarding completeness, accuracy, reliability and quality in order to assess the progress of the project and hence also its value. This paper will discuss the most important issues and aspects of a wind farm project which must be included in a technical due diligence.
